I’ve been kind of geeking out over this week’s DIY fur clutch. Isn’t it just so cute! I absolutely love being able to carry my laptop and binder around in it. The belted closure keeps everything inside secure and the foldover design makes it a piece of cake to put together. This project takes about an hour to complete and I’ll walk you through every step of the way.

The supplies you will need for this DIY fur clutch are super simple to find with Amazon. Below you can find what I’ll be using to complete this tutorial via shoppable (aff.) links or you could get similiar items at any craft store.

Steps:

First, cut both fabric pieces into 24″ x 19″ rectangles. Set your faux fur aside. Now, take out your magnetic closures and remove one set.

Measure about 3″ in from either side of the long edge of your rectangle to mark your magnetic closure placement. Use the closure package directions to punch one side of the magnetic closure through your faux leather fabric. I like to use jewelry pliers to fold each end of the closure into place for a snug fit. Be sure your magnet is showing one the leathery side of the fabric (or the “right” side.)

Now, fold your faux leather in half hamburger style to mark where the other side of your magnetic closure should sit. Punch the opposite side into place so when you fold your fabric in half, the magnets meet up automatically. Repeat on the other side.

Now, lay your faux fur over your leather fabric with both “right” sides facing together. Pin and sew around 3 sides leaving one smaller side open like a pouch.

Before flipping your bag inside out, cut the corners so your bag will lay nicely.

When you flip your clutch inside out, you should have something similiar to this:

Now that your basic clutch is nearly complete, it’s time to add the belted closure. Cut a 2″ x 28″  strip and a 2″ x 10″ strip. The smaller strip will be folded in half for your buckle itself and the longer strip is what wraps around the clutch.

Use a leather punch (I love this one and have used it for 10 years) to create uniform holes starting at 17″ and space them out every 2″ for as long as you want. I only put 3 total holes in my strip because I like how it looks.

Next take your shorter faux leather strip and punch a single hole directly in the center of it. Place it around the center bar of your buckle as pictured.

To secure the strips to your DIY fur clutch, you could either hand sew them both to the bottom center of the bag, or use a seam ripper to pick out 2″ of thread and sew them into place with a machine. I chose to sew them in place via a machine because I wanted this bag to be as sturdy as possible while still being incredibly simple to make.

On any given day, you will find my blogger binder and laptop nicely stored inside it. I love how chic it looks and the roomy interior. Also, check out this Lace Up Sweater Refashion  that I’m wearing below. It’s surprisingly simple! You can also find my other purse DIY posts here.

  1. How beautiful isn’t this piece of art! I’d love a pillow so cuddly and soft – I just regret the fact that I am a total failure when it comes to DIY. This post really made me inspired though, I ought to give this a try!
