DIY this no-sew clutch out of a placemat in under 30 minutes

I’m so excited to share this little DIY with you. This week, I’ll be making a boho-style, fringe clutch out of a straw kitchen place mat. You can get this project completed in under 30 minutes, takes inexpensive supplies, and looks unique when you’re finished. Sounds perfect right?

Let’s get started….

Kitchen Placemat Clutch Supplies:

Below are the supplies I will be using to complete this project, but don’t be discouraged if you don’t have them on hand. Either, click on an image below to be redirected to Amazon.com or feel free to improvise.

How to Make Your New Clutch:

First, you are going to fold your clutch in thirds. Feel free to experiment here to make the top layer (which will become your opening flap) whatever size you want. Keep in mind, you will have a bigger clutch if the front flap is smaller, but it may not close as easily.

I sewed the sides together to create a pocket, but you can also use E6000 Glue to hold it in place if you do not want to sew. While you are waiting for the glue to set, it can be helpful to hold your placemat in place using paper clips or binder clips.

Now, let’s add magnetic clasps to the front flap so your bag stays shut nicely.

Follow your package instructions to fix the magnetic clasps to your clutch. This should be really simple and take no special tools. Be sure your clasps are lined up before sticking them through your mat. Otherwise, your purse will close and look lopsided.

Now, your clutch should look similar to this:

Next, we get to decorate! Using the E6000 glue, apply your fringe and any other embellishments to your clutch. I applied mine at an angle on the front flap using the magnetic clasp as a guide. Then, I glued the dark brown fringe on one side before flipping the bag over and gluing the red fringe on the other side. I think it created a more finished look that hides any raw edges.

Feel free to experiment and lay your embellishments on your bag to see how they’ll look before gluing them down.

Now, your beautiful clutch is almost done but the magnetic clasp is a bit of an eyesore. Apply some glue to fix a stone in place and bring the whole bag together while hiding the ugly side of the closure.

You’re done! Let the glue set for a few hours before wearing your new clutch.

I love the interesting look of this bag. By starting with such a simple and inexpensive kitchen mat, you can spend more time making the bag your own and decorating to suit your style. Add a strap to make it a purse, use different materials to create different looks… get creative and come up with something truly your own! I’ll definitely be making more in the future.
